About Todd Woollen, MD, FAAFP

A farm boy from south central Nebraska, Dr. Woollen studied engineering science at Iowa State University with interests in biomedical engineering and artificial intelligence.  A friend suggested he become a rural physician in the spring of his sophomore year, which seemed a perfect calling.   Nine months later, Dr. Woollen was accepted to the University of  Nebraska Medical College with a regents scholarship.

Dr. Woollen was one of 6 medical students in his class of 120 accepted to the UNMC Primary Care Program.  This is a unique program that allows selected 4th year medical students to do the work of resident physicians.  He studied Internal Medicine for two years in Omaha, completing his internship in Internal Medicine in a major metropolitan research hospital setting.

The University of Nebraska Medical College was a nationally renowned pioneer in community based Rural Training Track Family Medicine Residency programs.  The nationally imitated program started in Grand Island, Nebraska where only two residents were accepted each year.  After completing the Internal Medicine internship, Dr. Woollen attended this program where training included procedures in Obstetrics (ultrasonography and C-sections), Gastroenterology (esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy) and Cardiology (functional testing).

Dr. Woollen has maintained board certification in Family Medicine since 2001.  He was honored with the Degree of Fellow in 2017. He is an aggressive patient advocate, with special interests in complex adult patients, obstetrics, childhood development, and psychology.
